I looked at the State Standards DRAFT for Social Studies. The draft is lacking in integrating 21st century skills. To me, it looks like someone just copied and pasted the previous skills underneath a heading of 21st century skills. Our students need to learn how to build a website, blog, twitter, e-mail, verify websites, use a GPS as well as organize the information to produce a product and work with others in person, on the phone, and using other technologies.

It is up to the State Board now to decide whether to adopt the standards as written, or to make any amendments. Votes on possible amendments and ratification are scheduled to be made at the next monthly State Board meeting (Dec 9-10).

After the State Board public testimony on Nov. 11, what are the next steps? Will the social studies standards undergo further revision before approval in December? Where will the final document be available for the public to examine?

Thank you for your leadership and for your comment, Mr. Chairman. We didn't mean to imply you don't run a tight ship. It was good to hear a healthy number of people offer their informed opinions on the new social studies standards. We're glad to have done our part, too.

It wasn't noted in this post, but the State Board is slated to vote on approving the standards next month at the December meeting. Stay tuned....

Hey, what's with the "but not surprisingly the State Board is already behind on its agenda. Stay tuned…." I usually run things on time here. We just happen to have extra citizens who showed up to speak. Something not to be discouraged and which we're pleased to accommodate.

Thanks to II for covering the standards and helping make the citizens aware of what's being discussed here.

I'm grateful for your leadership.

Thanks,
Bob Schaffer
